Their story is related through a series of scenes that celebrate, with appropriate musical numbers, the special happiness and minor crises of their long, happy marriage!
The production is a visual feast. Complete with a fully furnished set, and countless costumes and props, it is a special treat for any audience. The show begins with the first innocent hesitations and embarrassments of Agnes and Michael's wedding night. Next the tender moment when Agnes jubilantly sings "Something has Happened" and shows the audience her swelling profile, indicating just what it is that has happened. Then onto the realization of their love for each other with the song "My Cup Runneth Over". Becoming parents is quite a responsibility and they find that "Love Isn't Everything". As the years go by, Michael and Agnes are dressing for a dinner in his honor, when their bickering comes to a head in "Nobody;s Perfect". Later, when mid-life indiscretions appear, it's finally clear that "The Honeymoon Is Over". And what father doesn't complain "My daughter is marrying an idiot!" as Michael does in his song "The Father of the Bride". These are just a few of the many funny, Marvelous and unforgettable songs in I Do! I Do!.
Why is this show an audience pleaser? Certainly the marvelous talents of Annette and Don are a large part of the reason. But perhaps the fact that they are real life husband and wife adds that extra something. Whatever the reason, with its incredibly uplifting ending, I Do! I Do! helps us reaffirm what the lyrics of the finale song tell us... "marriage is a very good thing, though it's far from easy, still it's filled this house with... life... and... love!"
